About the Bremer Ratskeller:
Mighty vaults supported by 20 pillars, enormous ornamented barrels and rustic oak furnishing: Not only weather beaten men, wrote Heinrich Heine, like to look at the world through a "Römerglas", a German wine glass, from the middle of the Ratskeller. The historic hall with three naves is a popular meeting point for young and old. During the 5th season in Bremen, when the Freimarkt, the fun fair, takes place and on other special occasions this place is also full of life.
Bacchus, the god of wine, the incarnation of the boisterous reveller, is enthroned on a baroque barrel, raising his glass to the guests. This happy wooden lad already made an impression on the poet Hauff. Built in 1620 the Bacchus cellar is nowadays a popular place to celebrate family and business occasions. Almost 250 people have room here. The walls show frescos by Karl Dannemann, one of Max Slevogt's pupils. One fresco in a nook of the cellar, the so-called black hole, shows the dreadful fate of the carpenter Berthold who, full of the good wine, staked his life to death.
